About Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp, or Industrial Hemp, is a variety of the Cannabis Sativa plant species that is grown specifically for industrial use in products such as paper, textiles, clothing, biodegradable plastics, paint, insulation, biofuel and food. Hemp has a different chemical profile compared to its distinct cousin Marijuana. Hemp contains only a trace amount of THC (<.3%). Hemp is an FDA regulated crop.

Most people don’t realize how widely Hemp is used in everyday products. This versatile, earth-friendly crop can be grown without pesticides and toxic chemicals while using significantly less water than similar crops like cotton. An acre of hemp can yield as much pulp as 4 acres of trees and only takes 100 days from seed to harvest.

The seeds of the plant are often called Super Seeds, as they are high in protein as well as rich in omega-3 and omega-6. The seeds can be eaten whole or shelled, referred to as hemp hearts. They have a wonderful nutty flavor. The oil, extracted from the seeds, is used in food preparation and cosmetic products. Hemp seed oil has proven to be a viable biodegradable option for petroleum-based oils.

The hemp stalk is incredibly versatile. It has a bast fiber layer, which is used to make rope, canvas and textiles. Hurd, the inner core, is used for animal bedding, mulch, fillers for fiberboard, insulation, and concrete.

Hemp can actually improve soil health and is often referred to as a “mop crop.” It is planted for the purpose of bioremediation, which uses plants to accumulate, immobilize and transform low-level pollutants from soil and water as well as used in landfills to clean up metals, pesticides, solvents, explosives, crude oil, and toxins.

What is CBD?

Hemp contains over 113 naturally occurring chemical compounds called phytocannabinoids. Phyto means from the plant. One such phytocannabinoid called Cannabidiol, or CBD, is found in the flower and leaves of the female plant. The CBD is primarily extracted in the form of an oil. This oil is further refined for use in products such as oil tinctures, softgels, body care and cosmetics. CBD does not have any psychoactive properties, so it won’t get you “high”.

Hemp Oil, also referred to as CBD Oil, is made from the flower, leaves and stalks of the female plant and contains Cannabidiol (CBD). Labeling should show Hemp Extract on the label or ingredient list.

Trusted partners will provide independent, accredited laboratory testing for each Hemp-derived CBD product. Testing should provide a cannabinoid potency profile and show the product is FDA compliant.

Hemp Seed Oil is oil from Hemp seeds and does not contain CBD. This oil is most likely found in the cooking oil section of your grocery store.

CBD works with our Endocannabinoid System (ECS), which is a communication system that regulates bodily functions like motor control, pain, mood, sleep, inflammation and digestion. This system uses endocannabinoids (cannabinoids our body makes) to communicate with receptors in the network. CBD affects how the receptors (CB1 and CB2) in the Endocannabinoid system bind and process these chemical messages, effectively helping to rebalance the system.

Quality Matters

Not all hemp is created equal. Hemp is a very effective plant used for bioremediation of toxic and chemical disasters. The plant is tolerant to harmful chemicals which means it can appear healthy but due to where it was planted could contain pesticides, heavy metals and other toxic chemicals.

At Family Hemp Co., we only use hemp grown with U.S. Hemp Authority Certified farms in Colorado and Kentucky. All of our hemp is farmed using Organic Farming Practices. All product ingredients are ethically sourced and we never add artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.

From seed to manufactured product, the hemp is tested multiple times and must meet state and federal guidelines. We also conduct one of the industry’s most rigorous testing panel on the final product with third-party, accredited laboratories. Laboratory testing results, called Certificate of Analysis, are available for every Hemp-derived CBD product. All testing is available to before you buy. We believe in high quality products and full transparency.

Family Hemp Co. only sells hemp-derived products that are in full compliance with the regulations of the United States Federal Food & Drug Administration.
